Why Now Is the Time to Upgrade to PTC Windchill 13.1.3, and Why Fishbowl Solutions Is the Partner to Get Your There
Windchill 13.1.3, is now the platform every Windchill customer should be planning around.
If your organization is still running PTC Windchill 12.0 or 12.1, you’re standing at an inflection point. Standard support for Windchill 12.0 ended in mid-2024. The 12.1 stream is on its own runway. And PTC’s latest long-term-support release, Windchill 13.1.3, is now the platform every Windchill customer should be planning around.
This isn’t a “wait and see” release. The 13.1 family is the foundation PTC is building its AI strategy on, it’s the version your CAD, MES, and ERP integrations will be certified against for years to come, and it’s where PTC is now concentrating its investment dollars.
The question isn’t whether to upgrade. It’s how, and with whom.
At Fishbowl Solutions, we’ve been delivering PTC Windchill upgrades since 1999. We’ve just completed Windchill 13.1+ upgrade projects across a range of industries, from telecommunications equipment to industrial filtration and motion control. Our broader client base spans Fortune 500 medical-device, industrial-engine, and outdoor-power-equipment manufacturers, as well as leading general-aviation and large-format electronic-display companies. Engineering teams at organizations of every size trust us to move them forward on PTC’s release roadmap without disruption to engineering.
Here’s what’s changing in the 13.1 family, what PTC’s strategic refocus means for you, what’s at stake if you stay put, and how our methodology turns a high-risk upgrade project into a predictable, fixed-bid milestone delivery.
PTC is doubling down on Windchill
In March 2026, PTC completed the divestiture of its ThingWorx and Kepware businesses to TPG, narrowing its strategic focus to what it calls the Intelligent Product Lifecycle. For Windchill customers, the translation is simple: the platform you’ve built your engineering and manufacturing data on is exactly where PTC is now concentrating its product investment, AI investment, and roadmap energy.
That refocus is showing up everywhere in the 13.1 family. New AI capabilities are landing inside Windchill itself rather than in adjacent products. The user experience is being modernized end to end. Manufacturing and BOM workflows are getting first-class treatment. If you’re a Windchill customer, the headline of 2026 is that the platform under your engineering organization just became PTC’s main act.
For customers with adjacent investments in ThingWorx-based tools, there are some strategic questions worth thinking through. Fishbowl has been delivering Windchill upgrades, integrations, and migrations through every major PTC strategic shift since 1999. We can help you sort out what stays, what changes, and what to plan for.
What’s actually new in Windchill 13.1
This release family is more than a version bump. It brings several long-promised capabilities into general availability and starts pulling the platform into the AI era.
A modernized user experience
Windchill 13.1 introduces what PTC calls its Next Gen UI: a redesigned homepage, dynamic dashboards, and intuitive table controls. For your engineers, that means fewer clicks, less context-switching, and a workspace that actually feels like a modern product, not a 2010-era web application.
Creo View Web (no plugins, no installs)
Visualization has historically been one of the most painful parts of any Windchill deployment. Creo View Web changes that. It’s a browser-based 3D visualization included with Windchill 13.1, with no installs, no plugins, no IT overhead, automatic updates, and a modern user experience. Engineering, manufacturing, quality, and even external collaborators can view and mark up product data from any device.
Foundational AI inside the PLM
This is the headline of the 13.1 family. Windchill now includes foundational AI capabilities, with early features like Windchill AI Parts Rationalization and the Windchill AI Assistant. These help reduce manual effort and boost productivity. They aren’t bolt-on chatbots; they’re domain-specific tools that surface insights from your existing PLM data, which means the ROI compounds as your data grows.
Manufacturing and BOM transformation
For organizations bridging engineering and production, the 13.1 family brings real horsepower:
- Mass-generate manufacturing BOMs and process plans
- Apply mass changes across structures
- Reuse process plans rather than rebuilding them
- Expanded redlining and supplier traceability for BOM collaboration
The reimagined BOM reporting tool, with one-click Excel export and customizable layouts, alone justifies the upgrade for many of our customers.
Stronger security and digital-thread integration
Windchill 13 expanded encryption, access control, and audit-trail capabilities, which are meaningful for regulated industries. It continues to deepen integration with Creo, Vuforia, and the broader PTC product family for organizations connecting PLM data to downstream systems and use cases.
The cost of waiting
We hear the same hesitations from prospects every quarter: “Our team is busy. Our system works. We’ll upgrade next year.”
Here’s what “next year” actually looks like:
- You’re paying for software you can’t fully use. Every release you skip is paid-for innovation sitting on the shelf.
- Support windows close. Windchill 12.0 standard support ended June 30, 2024. Sustained support is not the same thing, since there are no new SPR fixes, no new patches, and a clock that’s still ticking.
- The upgrade gets harder, not easier. PTC doesn’t provide a direct upgrade path from 12.0.2 to 13.1, so it requires a “double jump” through an intermediate 13.0.2 release. The longer you wait, the more intermediate steps stack up.
- Your Creo, AutoCAD, and integration ecosystem drifts out of compatibility. Every CAD version, every workgroup manager, and every third-party integration has its own support matrix. Falling behind on Windchill cascades into falling behind everywhere.
- Your team forgets how the system was installed. The engineers who set up your current Windchill instance may no longer be at your company. The longer you wait, the more institutional knowledge erodes.
What a Fishbowl Windchill upgrade actually looks like
Our upgrade methodology has been refined across hundreds of projects. Because we’re constantly running these upgrades, our team knows the steps and the undocumented best practices that get the work done correctly and efficiently. Every Fishbowl Windchill 13.1 upgrade follows the same five-milestone framework and is delivered remotely as a fixed-bid engagement, so there are no surprise invoices halfway through.
Milestone 1: Kickoff and Planning
We confirm the team, roles, and responsibilities. We validate that your hardware, OS, JDK, Creo, AutoCAD, Inventor, and Creo View versions are all compatible with Windchill 13.1, and we provide PTC’s official software compatibility matrix so there’s no guesswork. You walk out of kickoff with a schedule, a remote-access plan, and a checklist of pre-upgrade actions.
Milestone 2: Test Upgrade(s)
This is the rehearsal. We perform the full upgrade, including the “double jump” through 13.0.2 if you’re coming from 12.0.2, on a new VM that will eventually become your production environment. We integrate Active Directory, apply performance tuning, and measure exactly how long each step takes. If the first test upgrade doesn’t pass, we run another. We don’t cap the number of test upgrades required to lock in a clean process.
Milestone 3: Pilot Validation
Your key users put the test system through “day in the life” testing, including creating objects, checking in and out, revising, running workflows, validating access control, exercising CAD save-as, and exercising any customizations. Fishbowl troubleshoots and reworks anything that doesn’t pass. We leave this milestone only when your team signs off.
Milestone 4: Production Upgrade and Go-Live Support
The production upgrade is the test upgrade you already approved, only now it’s running against your real data, on a weekend window designed for minimal engineering downtime. We notify users in advance to check work in, perform the cutover, install and configure Creo View Visualization and any Fishbowl applications you own, and validate before Monday morning. After go-live, a Fishbowl consultant is available remotely for hypercare support during the critical first weeks.
Milestone 5: Test/Dev Rehost and Project Closeout
If you want a new test/dev environment, we take a snapshot of your fresh production instance and rehome it as Test/Dev, typically updating the hosts file aliases, wt.properties, Apache configuration, and other critical locations needed to fully separate the two environments. If you’re running Windchill Navigate, we’ll update that integration in the same window so your role-based apps stay current with the new Windchill version.
Simple, Complete, Flexible
Three principles guide every Windchill upgrade we deliver.
Simple. There’s no need to make an upgrade more complicated than it needs to be. Windchill is likely managing the most important engineering data and processes for your business. Having it up and running efficiently is the goal. Our methodology, our fixed-bid pricing, and our remote delivery model are all designed to get you there with as little friction as possible.
Complete. Fishbowl’s services include not just the version upgrade, but everything around it: upgrading or de-customizing existing customizations, integrating with Creo, AutoCAD, Inventor, and your downstream systems, go-live support, and the knowledge transfer your administrators need to run the new system confidently after we leave.
Flexible. Every Windchill environment is different. Our consulting offering scales from a straightforward Out-of-the-Box upgrade to complex configurations with extensive customizations. Ask us about cloud rehosting and our Remote System Administration and Managed Services offerings if you want Fishbowl involved beyond the upgrade itself.
Why customers come back to Fishbowl
One of the Windchill 13.1 upgrades we recently delivered was for a mid-size industrial manufacturer in the motion-control and filtration space, and it was the third consecutive Windchill upgrade we’ve delivered for that customer, going back to 2020. That kind of repeat business isn’t an accident.
- We’ve been a PTC partner since 1999, which is longer than most of our competitors have existed.
- Our consultants don’t disappear after go-live. Hypercare is part of every SOW, not an upsell.
- Fixed-bid pricing means fixed-bid pricing. If a test upgrade doesn’t pass validation, we run another one. That’s our risk, not yours.
- Remote delivery keeps costs down without sacrificing responsiveness.
- We build the tools, too. Fishbowl Utilities for Windchill, AutoCAD publishing apps, the MS Teams App for Windchill, and LinkPortal, so if you need more than an out-of-the-box upgrade, we already have the building blocks.
“When I need a Windchill ninja, I know right where to go, to Fishbowl. Please give your team an air-five on behalf of our fine system design engineers. We’re back in business.”
Director of Product Development, world leader in agricultural systems
“The Fishbowl team’s vast experience helped us tremendously. Their knowledge of Windchill exceeded our expectations in every way. Not only did they complete all the tasks in a timely manner, but they also took the time to teach and train us on the subject matter so that we can support the system ourselves.”
Windchill PLM Administrator, aerospace company
That’s the standard we deliver against on every project, including yours.
