Microsoft is in the process of phasing out Basic Authentication for Webcenter Enterprise Capture to make way for a more secure solution. This means that clients using WebCenter Enterprise Capture with email processor jobs that are using Microsoft Basic Authentication will be impacted. Once Microsoft disables Basic Authentication, the Email Processor Jobs will no longer ingest and process emails.

To avoid disruption of your email processing, the solution for WebCenter Enterprise Capture clients is to patch the server to allow OAuth (Open Authorization) for authentication. OAuth is an open-standard authorization protocol or framework that describes how unrelated servers and services can safely allow authenticated access to their assets without actually sharing the initial, related, single logon credential.

While Basic Authentication is simpler, it also makes it easier for attackers to capture user credentials (particularly if the credentials are not protected by TLS), which increases the risk of those stolen credentials being reused against other endpoints or services.
